Pi Day is this Friday, March 14th!
Pi Day is an unofficial holiday celebrating the mathematical constant of pi (π). Pi appears throughout mathematics, science, and engineering, and its history can be paralleled with mathematics itself. Pi is an irrational number, meaning that its decimal value is infinite. Pi is the ratio of a circle’s area to the square of its radius. Its decimal value is commonly shortened to 3.14, thus the day March 14th (3/14) is chosen as Pi Day. By coincidence, March 14th is also Albert Einstein’s birthday. Pi appears throughout mathematics, science, and engineering, and its history can be paralleled with mathematics itself.
Pi is well integrated into popular culture. It is a trend among many people to try to memorize Pi to as many decimal places as they can. On Pi Day in 2004, Daniel Tammet recited 22514 decimals of pi from memory. Pi Day was first celebrated in 1988 in at the San Francisco Exploratorium. Some people go as far as celebrating Pi Second, which is March 14th at 1:59 (commonly p.m.) and 26 seconds.
Some people also celebrate Pi Approximation Day on either July 22 or on November 10th. July 22 appears as 22/7 in most date formats, which the fraction gives an approximation of pi. November 10th is the 314th day of year (November 9th on leap year).
Most important, the celebration of pi day is commonly done with the consumption of pie. I love pi, and i love pie. Therefore, i love Pi Day.
